Electrical Double-Layer Capacitors (EDLCs)Murata Supercapacitors are thin, low-resistance, electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). Recently released are the DMD and DME series, EDLC that do not have traditional dielectric layers. Instead, the EDLCs innovative design utilizes the phenomenon of storing charge in an “electrical double layer”, formed at the solid-liquid interface. Murata’s EDLCs optimization of electro chemical properties and advanced packaging contribute to a number of features that make it ideal for applications that require burst or pulse loads, such as LED flash, power amplifiers and audio circuits; they deliver a compact part with high capacitance, high voltage with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) over a wide temperature range and offer much higher energy storage and power density than any existing conventional capacitor technology. Furthermore, the DMD and DME series’ ability to deliver peak current assistance to the load allow it to extend battery life between charges.

The eco-friendly, fully RoHS-complient DMD and DME series offer low ESR (as little as 30mΩ at 1kHz) and enable high-current, high charge-discharge rates and a high peak voltage of 2.7V per cell. They exhibit stable output characteristics over a wide operating temperature range (-30º C to +70º C). In addition, Murata is developing a series with operating temperatures up to +85º C. The Murata EDLCs can be incorporated into non portable equipment for a wide array of applications, such as back-up and pulse transmission (solid state drives, smart meters and industrial applications). They deliver no-maintenanance power storage with a useful life exceeding 100,000 cycles.

Available in 2.7V and 5.5V options, the 2.7V single cell, with a 700mF value, measures only 20.5mm X 18.5mm X 1.5mm. The 5.5V double cell features a thin 20.5mm X 18.5mm X 3.0mm package and a 350mF value. In 2012, the EDLC product series will be expanded to include additional values.
